After successfully fighting off a U.S. Justice Department challenge to the deal, UnitedHealth Group's Optum Unit completed Monday's $13 billion acquisitionof software and data analytics firm Change Healthcare.

Optum, which is a rapidly-growing segment of UnitedHealth Group, announced that Change Healthcare would become part of OptumInsight to "provide software and data analytics and technology-enabled service and research, advisory, and revenue cycle management offerings to make health care better for all."

This is the largest addition to OptumInsight's business since UnitedHealth bought the Advisory Board’s healthcare business in 2017. It includes data analytics and consulting, as well as population health, for $1.3 billion.

The Change acquisition was announced in January 2021 by UnitedHealth and Optum. It was an attempt to increase the company's efforts towards improving health outcomes and the health of the population.

Optum stated Monday that the combined businesses shared a vision to create a simpler, smarter, and more adaptive health system for patients and payers. The combination will simplify and connect the core clinical, administrative, and payment processes that health care providers and payers rely on to provide patient care. The entire system will be better off if efficiency is improved and friction is reduced. This will result in lower costs and better experiences for all parties.

UnitedHealth is still the largest national health insurance company and sells commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare Advantage plans. However, the company is growing in the medical care provider sector of the healthcare system. OptumRx, the nation's largest pharmacy benefit manager, is owned by Optum. It also owns a variety of medical care provider businesses including doctor practices and urgent care centers across the country.
